Before you or your child participates in a sport or activity, a pre-participation physical or pre-training assessment is important to ensure you’re at optimal health for that level of activity.
Essentially, these assessments have two main parts:
Medical history
Your provider collects information related to your past health history, including previous illnesses or injuries, medications, allergies, and family history.
Physical examination
A physical exam involves measuring your vital signs, evaluating your body systems, recording your height and weight, and testing your vision and hearing.
Depending on your age and the nature of your sport or activity, your provider may suggest you also have a pre-activity electrocardiogram (EKG) to establish that you have a healthy heart rhythm.
